New in the Library!

 

Spring Semester Greetings to one and all!

We've put together a long list of new items in The Lease Book Collection and highlighted the author's names in blue if you're looking for someone in particular. Our faithful regulars, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, David Baldacci, Anthony Horowitz, Stuart Woods and others are here for a chilly day. Then there are a couple of new twists on traditional tales offered up as Molly Greeley chooses a minor character for a look at Pride and Prejudice from another perspective in The Heiress: The Revelations of Anne de Bourgh, (one of the most mother dominated females in English Literature). We also have In the Garden of Spite: A Novel of the Black Widow of La Porte, a fictionalization of the life of Belle Gunness, one of the most prolific female serial killers in American History. And for those who love historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell's last installment in The Saxon Saga; War Lord, is here so we all can know what happens to Uhtred of Bebbanburg and(spoiler alert for those who don't read history) the outcome of Alfred the Great's plans for England.

Sorry, ....No Tree

This is the time of year when Laurie in the BLRC starts nagging us about 

Foster Angels of Hillsborough County and handing out deadlines before we even celebrate Thanksgiving. In fact, before the turkey left overs are cold and another slice of pumpkin pie is indulged, she's on about Black Friday! 

But not this year. Due to the conditions of Covid-19 collecting tags, presents and picking up is less than practical.  So...No Tree This Year.  However, I'm still going to nag you a little bit, because after Black Friday comes Cyber Monday, and after that...Giving Tuesday!

 Perhaps you can hold back what you might have spent on a gift for a Foster Angel and make a direct donation. The link to the Foster Angels website is below.  Just click on "How can you help?" You can also look at the list of locations and ask if any of those close to you are active this year. 

As HCC employees we were able to work from home and continued to receive income. Whereas, many people in the community did with less or completely without. This time of year, which can be difficult for many, has become impossible. So, if not Foster Angels, please give to any program of your choice and have an impact in your community for the holidays, and beyond.

NEW BESTSELLERS!

  New titles are now available in the Lease Book Collection. Lee Child, Stuart Woods, Jonathan Kellerman and Isabelle Allende are among the many. Annette Hess's The German House, touches on the current wave of World War II novels by examining the repercussions of that war through the 1963 Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. A young woman working as a translator struggling to come to grips with the questions over German culpability and begins to doubt her own choices. 

Thomas Keneally's historical novel, The Book of Science and Antiquities, travels back into prehistoric time where "Learned Man" begins a journey beyond simple existence in the course of human development and aspires to ideals and achievement. Foster Angel Tree

No matter your faith or celebration, Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkuh next month, Diwali in the fall or Eid al Ftir in spring, each holiday season has a feeling that's not only about where we are, but who we are with...our families. And family, along with extended family, are the focus of the 
Foster Angels of Hillsborough County.

The BLRC is again participating in the Foster Angels gift giving program. 

Between April 2018 and March 2019, 1,396 children were removed from parental custody and placed into foster care in Hillsborough County. This represents an almost equal number of households who took in a child. Many foster parents take in more than one child, and some foster siblings to keep them together. For these families the holidays represent higher expenses, and the Foster Angel program helps to defer some of the cost while foster parents see to the necessities. We encourage you to participate once again, making the holiday a little easier for another family in our community. 

The tree is now up in the BLRC, and the same process applies: Take a tag, buy a gift on the list, wrap it, attach the tag and bring it back before December 15. I will let you know if that date is changed or extended. And thank you, HCC Brandon. Your participation helps a child feel a little bit more at home during the holidays.

The Geography of Bliss    

  Traveling to ten different countries (including America), Weiner asks what makes the residents happy, or in some cases unhappy. His humorous and informative approach examines everything between the extremes, from Iceland (happy) to Moldova (miserable), and asks questions of the individual as well as taking the social perspective. Is happiness cultural, economic or political? Can national leadership ensure happiness for its citizens, or is it only an individual choice?

We have provided a world map in the BLRC, and many of our students have already placed a pin in their happiest spot, and shared their memories of why they were happy there. 
Please, stop by and place a pin in your own location of happiness. 

Non-Fiction Arrivals

 New non-fiction items are arriving weekly for the permanent 

collection and we don't want our non-fiction readers to feel left out.  There seems to be an adventure theme this week with tales of danger and risk, including one very daring librarian outrunning Al Qaeda, as he and others risk all to save ancient manuscripts in 

The Badass Librarians of Timbuktu 

Hedy's Folly is a fascinating account of Hedy Lamarr's daring escape from the Nazi's with a thorough knowledge of military technology and an idea that would change modern communications technology into the twenty first century.

Texas Ranger, the Epic Life of Frank Hamer tells the story of the unique American life of the man who caught and killed Bonnie and Clyde. But before that, Hamer led a daring life along the Mexican border where the Mexican Revolution spilled over into the U.S., and he protected African Americans from lynch mobs, hunted the Ku Klux Klan, and fought The Bandit War of 1915.

The Beekeeper, Rescuing the Stolen women of Iraq is the 
unfolding tale of one man who used subterfuge, smugglers and their routes to rescue Yazidi women from ISIS slavery.
