Where in the world were you the happiest, and why?

That’s the question asked by this year’s selection for Campus Reads for the 2019-2020 Fall and Spring Academic year

The Geography of Bliss    

  Traveling to ten different countries (including America), Weiner asks what makes the residents happy, or in some cases unhappy. His humorous and informative approach examines everything between the extremes, from Iceland (happy) to Moldova (miserable), and asks questions of the individual as well as taking the social perspective. Is happiness cultural, economic or political? Can national leadership ensure happiness for its citizens, or is it only an individual choice?

We have provided a world map in the BLRC, and many of our students have already placed a pin in their happiest spot, and shared their memories of why they were happy there.

Non-Fiction Arrivals

 New non-fiction items are arriving weekly for the permanent 

collection and we don't want our non-fiction readers to feel left out.  There seems to be an adventure theme this week with tales of danger and risk, including one very daring librarian outrunning Al Qaeda, as he and others risk all to save ancient manuscripts in

Hedy's Folly is a fascinating account of Hedy Lamarr's daring escape from the Nazi's with a thorough knowledge of military technology and an idea that would change modern communications technology into the twenty first century.

Texas Ranger, the Epic Life of Frank Hamer tells the story of the unique American life of the man who caught and killed Bonnie and Clyde. But before that, Hamer led a daring life along the Mexican border where the Mexican Revolution spilled over into the U.S., and he protected African Americans from lynch mobs, hunted the Ku Klux Klan, and fought The Bandit War of 1915.

The Beekeeper, Rescuing the Stolen women of Iraq is the 
unfolding tale of one man who used subterfuge, smugglers and their routes to rescue Yazidi women from ISIS slavery.

New Fiction in the Library

People who don't live in Florida in the summer have a hard time understanding why we consider this the "severe" season, with its high humidity and temperatures to match. If we can't sit on the beach, July is when we stay inside in the air conditioning, preparing our hurricane kits and hoping for the best. So, if you're indoors to stay cool and everything on Netflix and HBO is too dark, mysterious or disturbing and you're burnt out on binge watching, a novel is just the antidote.  We have some newer names along with our veteran writers with plenty of variety to choose from. And if dark, mysterious or disturbing is still your thing, a new book series based on Netflix's Stranger Things has been released, beginning with Suspicious Minds, pictured above.

                                   Banned Books Week 2018     

It’s easy to take your freedoms for granted when you’ve never known any other way of living. But for many people in the world choosing to read what you wish, view what you wish or speak what you wish is not an option. Yet here in America, there is always someone who doesn’t want you to read something. Of course, in America, saying you shouldn’t read something usually means everyone will rush out to read it. Such was the case with Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita. Charges of obscenity and banning in France and English ensured that sales in America would get off to a good start. The same was true of the Satanic Verses, which hit best seller lists on its release even though many western readers found it unfathomable.   

The most common forms of book banning here in the United States are localized challenges which lead to a title being removed from reading lists or from library shelves.  The most shocking aspect of some of these cases are not the books contents, but that teachers and librarians are often the source of the challenge. Of course, banning books has been going on since the invention of the printing press, and rationals to ban this or that title are still common place. Often the issue is the difference between a parental control or preventing someone else from reading a title altogether.

A common parental objection is the appropriateness of the material for their children. This was the issue behind the challenge to The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brian. Many parents felt the language and descriptions of battle too graphic. Another group attempted to ban Fahrenheit 451, a book about book banning, because one of the books burned in the novel was the Bible. Conversely, To Kill a Mockingbird came under challenge because of racial slurs and its portrayal of a mentally disabled person as not  representative of current values. 

Every year the American Library Association designates the last week of September as Banned Books Week, in order to draw attention to the many classics of American and world literature which have been considered too vile or too inflammatory to be read. It's hard to imagine the American cultural landscape without Hemingway, Flannery O'Conner or Steinbeck, yet at some point someone tried to prevent others from reading their work. 
So, exercise your freedom.  Read a book, any book, it's your choice!
